Starring Griffith Park

Carved from the former Spanish land grant Rancho Los Feliz, Griffith Park, the 4,300-acre wilderness in the heart of Los Angeles, has been a playground for Angelenos for over a century. Since 1896, when the land was donated by philanthropist Griffith J. Griffith, generations of weekenders enjoyed its many features. The park, which lies in the shadow of the Hollywood sign, has been a frequent filming site for legendary movies like Back to the Future, Birth of a Nation, and Rebel Without a Cause.

Authors E.J. Stephens and Marc Wanamaker will present an evening of clips about Griffith Park as a filming location from the earliest years to the present.

Their Arcadia Publishing book on Griffith Park will be available for sale and for signing by the authors the evening of the show following their presentation.

As a young Groucho Marx fan(atic), author Steve Stoliar landed the plum job of working in the home of the legendary comedian as Groucho’s personal secretary and archivist. Steve spent quality time with Zeppo, Gummo, and scores of luminaries of stage, screen, television and literature. The downside of this dream was getting close to his idol as the curtain was ringing down and dealing with Erin Fleming – the mercurial woman in charge of Groucho’s personal and professional life.

Steve will share his reminiscences of the three years he spent with Groucho, including rare clips from Steve’s unseen 1974 “home  movie”, in which Groucho sings and gives a brief interview. Steve’s presentation will be followed by a Q&A and book signing.

Steve Stoliar has been a professional writer and  voice-over actor for 25- plus years, penning episodes of the television series Murder She Wrote, Simon & Simon and Sliders, and providing voices for                     numerous animated specials.

Acclaimed author Anthony Slide will go “Inside the Hollywood Fan Magazine” with a heavily illustrated presentation about this fascinating and indispensable chapter in journalism and popular culture. Hear how the fan magazines dealt with gossip and innuendo and how they handled nationwide issues such as Hollywood scandals of the 1920s, World War ll, and the blacklist. At the end of the program, there will be a book signing.
