The Society for Cinephiles will present the 39th annual Cinecon classic film festival and memorabilia show in Hollywood over Labor Day Weekend, August 28 through September 1, 2003. Cinecon is the oldest and the grandest of the movie related fan festivals, and Cinecon 39 promises to offer an outstanding five day program of unusual films, exciting celebrity guests and one of the best movie memorabilia marts in the nation.
The host hotel will again be the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel located at 1755 North Highland Avenue next to the Hollywood and Highland entertainment complex. As in recent years, most of the screenings will be held in the Lloyd E. Rigler Theatre at the restored Grauman’s Egyptian on Hollywood Boulevard, and the extensive Cinecon movie collectibles dealers rooms will be in the Renaissance Hotel. In addition to the dealers rooms, a major Hollywood Poster Auction will also be a part of Cinecon. The auction will be under the supervision of Morris Everett, Jr. and will take place on Saturday, August 30. Added information about the auction may be found at www.hollywoodposterauctions.com
Among the rare items offered for auction will be posters for The Heart Specialist starring Mary Miles Minter, Dirigible Frank Capra’s stirring adventure film, The Ten Commandments Cecil B. DeMille’s silent masterpiece, and Mickey starring Mabel Normand.
Planning for the Cinecon 39 film program is underway, and there will be an outstanding five-day line up of rare and unusual silent and early sound films from the film archives and Hollywood studios. Among the films to be screened are (pending final clearance) Kick In (1931) starring Jazz Age icon Clara Bow, The Half Breed (1916) starring Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., Nine Girls (1944) a great comedy-mystery from director Leigh Jason, The Side Show (1928) a drama of circus life recently preserved by UCLA and Olive Thomas, The Most Beautiful Girl in the World (2003) a new documentary about the tragic star of the Ziegfeld Follies and silent films.
