We are excited to announce that our inaugural exhibit for the reopening of the Hollywood Heritage Museum will be "The Pacific Title ArchivesÑthe History of Movie Title Art since 1919. Pacific Title has played a major role in the motion picture industry since 1919, when Leon Schlesinger, a Warner Brothers animator, established a film titling lab on Bronson Avenue off Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood. Beginning with the landmark films of Hollywood's silent era, to its first talking picture, The Jazz Singer, to such legendary films as Gone With the Wind, and Ben-Hur, and continuing with present day blockbusters. There's nothing like an elaborate title sequence to set the mood of a movie. Pacific Title is the leader in the field. In the old days titles were painted on glass by gifted artists. The titles were then placed over an original background painting for the optical department to film as part of a main title and end title credit sequence. Although the Academy exhibited some examples of the golden age of title art in March 1997, HHI's exhibit will be substantially expanded with newly discovered titles thought lost, and with an emphasis on silent and early sound film examples. We expect this to be a colorful and exciting exhibit. Although we anticipate the opening soon, much will depend on our success in recruiting docents.
