Cinecon 36,
the oldest classic film festival in the world, will once again be a part of
Hollywood this Labor Day weekend, August 31 to September 4. The festival
originally traveled to different locations each year before settling in Hollywood
at the Roosevelt Hotel. The past three years it has been held at the Red Lion
Hotel and the historic Alex Theater in Glendale. For the year 2000, the program
returns to the Roosevelt and the Egyptian Theater.
Cinecon consists of a dealers room where movie memorabilia (photos, posters, books, videos, etc.) are sold by dealers from throughout the country, guest speakers, rarely seen movies from the silents to the 1950s, and an awards reception. Celebrities attend to speak as well as just visit and see the show.
This years
program includes, thus far, discussions with actress Jan Sterling (The High
and the Mighty, Ace in the Hole, The Harder They Fall, etc.), voiceover
specialist and actress June Foray (the voice of Rocky the Flying Squirrel, Natasha,
Witch Hazel, and countless others including the classic Lux Radio Hour programs),
and Eddie Bracken (Miracle At Morgans Creek, Hail the Conquering Hero,
etc.), with others to be announced shortly (check their
web site at http:// www.cinecon.org).
The
film program includes a number of Hollywood cinematic treats at the Egyptian
Theater obtained from studios and archives throughout the U.S. and Europe. Many
have not been seen since their original release. These include the re-premiere
of Mary Pickfords long unseen Behind the Scenes (1914) accompanied
by the Mont Alto Theater Orchestra, Tom Sawyer (1917) starring Jack Pickford
with a new score by Maria Newman performed by a string quartet, and the seldom
seen It Happened in Hollywood starring Richard Dix and Fay Wray in a
1930s behind-the-scenes look at Hollywood. Over 30 other feature films and numerous
shorts will be shown, and all silent films will be shown with live musical accompaniment
(piano or orchestra).
