A
favorite of Hollywood Heritage members and all fans of silent movies is our
ever popular "Silents Under the Stars" program each summer under the
direction of Randy Haberkamp and Jere Guldin. The programs are located at the
historic Paramount Ranch in Agoura. As with our silent movie programs at UCLA
and at the museum, live musical accompaniment is provided by the talented Michael
Mortilla.
The programs are co-sponsored by the National Park Service (the ranch is part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area) and the Silent Society of Hollywood Heritage. Come early and enjoy the beautiful scenery and dramatic sunsets. Bring a picnic dinner and a flashlight (lighting is limited in the parking area).
Directions: Take the Ventura Freeway (101) to the Kanan Rd. exit south. Make a quick left at Agoura Road, then right on Cornell Road. Follow signs for the turn to Paramount Ranch on the right. For more information call (805) 370-2301.
Sunday, July 16, 8:00 pmSteamboat Bill, Jr. (1928) directed by Charles F. Reisner and starring Buster Keaton, Ernest Torrence, Marion Brian, Tom Lewis, Tom McGuin. This film has to be seen to be believed. Not just for Keatons hilarious comedy work and story, but also for the cyclone sequence that has no equal in its amazing use of special effects and Keatons stunt work. It keeps the audience laughing and in awe.
Sunday, August 20, 7:30 pmFeel My Pulse (1928) directed by Gregory LaCava and starring Bebe Daniels, William Powell, and Richard Arlen. One of the 20s brightest stars, Bebe Daniels, stars as a young woman who has inherited an island sanitarium from her uncle. When the patients turn out to be disguised bootleggers, undercover reporter Richard Arlen comes to the rescue . . . or does he? This is a rarely seen comedy treat directed by comedy expert LaCava (Gabriel Over the White House, Stage Door) who would later return with Powell for My Man Godfrey.
Surprise short subjects will precede each feature.
