Wattles Mansion and Gardens
Lured by the pleasant climate, many wealthy Eastern and Midwestern families built winter homes in Southern California at the turn of the century. "Wintering" in California soon became a very popular pastime. "Jualita" as Gurdon Wattles, an Omaha businessman and banker, called his forty-nine acre estate, is the last remaining intact example of this phenomenon in Hollywood.
In
1907, the Wattles family commissioned noted architects Myron Hunt and Elmer
Grey, whose portfolio also included the Beverly Hills Hotel, Huntington Library,
and Pasadena's Rose Bowl. The team of Hunt and Grey designed this Mission
Revival residence with extensive grounds that featured a Japanese Garden,
an Italian Rose Garden, a Formal Spanish Garden, Palm Court, and orchards,
as well as boasting exotic plants from around the world. In the early days
of this century, the Wattles Mansion and its gardens, along with the estate
of painter Paul De Longpre and the Sturtevant family's giant lily pads, generated
nationwide interest, and soon became Hollywood's first tourist attractions.
Hollywood Heritage (a private non-profit preservation organization) began restoration efforts in 1983, and today the estate serves as their headquarters. Rental revenue is our current source of funding for restoration and rennovation as we strive to maintain Jualita as one of the City's premier showplaces. In 1993 the Wattles Mansion was designated as City of Los Angeles Cultural Monument No. 579.
Parties, weddings and receptions, as well as corporate events and filming have found Jualita to be the perfect backdrop for the most festive occasions. Motion pictures, television shows and music videos favor the estate because of its unique and versatile applications for location filming. You too will be delighted to discover the many amenities we can offer to serve your needs and make your event a memorable one. . . . Jualita continues to attract tourists and provide a glimpse into a vanished era.
Today the grounds and mansion, managed, maintained and funded by Hollywood Heritage, is used for private functions, including weddings, filming, and other special events.
